Along the coast, Florence to Newport, Oregon

Reluctantly, we left Florence and began our trek northward to Newport, Oregon.  This stretch of U.S. Hwy 101 closely follows the coastline, providing awesome views of the ocean and the rocky beaches below. We cruised through small towns like Yachats, Waldport and Seal Rock. The famed Sea Lion Caves are located just north of Florence. The hwy eventually crosses the Yaquina Bay Bridge into Newport and it's famed waterfront.

For most of it's winding twisting way over mountainous terrain, U.S. Hwy 101 is a paved two laned undivided hwy shared with bicycles.  In exchange for this treacherous sounding excuse for a hwy, you're treated to awe inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean!

I am only going to present these pictures as they pretty much explain themselves. Any highlights will be noted. Please enjoy them.

There are many pull outs along this stretch of hwy. This allows faster vehicles to pass and also presents many picture taking opportunities.

The picture above was taken from this bridge.

This picture was taken from the pull out spot just north of the bridge.

Probably one of my favorite pictures. This is a combination of light fog and ocean spray.

There are many bridges along the coast. Because Hwy 101 follows the rugged terrain there are many rivers and tributaries that flow to the sea. During periods of heavy, extended rainfall landslides may occur causing road closures or delays.

For winter travel, it's best to check with the Oregon Department of Transportation to ensure the hwy is open. Detours are available but they will be very time consuming as you'll be directed over to I-5.
One of the many drawbridges you'll encounter on Hwy 101
