Foley Railroad Museum and Pirates Cove

As you know, we spent some three months in Gulf Shores, Alabama. If you like railroads, which I do, the Foley Railroad Museum is a must see. It was raining so we decided it would be a good day to enjoy this museum and stay dry at the same time. Mother Nature was kind to us and waited until we were safely inside before starting her down pouring of rain.....

Jasmine and I enjoying a piece of history before going inside the museum.

This is an actual working scale model of one of the steam engines that operated in this area.

The price is right, but it's only open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The exhibits were plentiful, there's a gift shop, (of course) and the model trains operate for four hours each day. Bring the family, the little ones will love to see Thomas the Train!

The museum is full of the railroad history of this area. There is an abundance of steam engines, large and small throughout the museum whose centerpiece is the model railroad in the adjacent room.

Growing up as a kid, we had an American Flyer train set. (I still have it) My dad mounted the tracks on a 4X8 sheet of plywood and we built a train station around it. I remember stashing it behind the couch in the living room when we weren't actively playing with it. However, this layout put ours to shame.

On the other hand, I didn't have a warehouse which would house our layout. This project had numerous trains running constantly. There was even a ferris wheel, a fire station, school and many of the things you'd see in a regular city.

Ummmm...............someone flunked spelling or forget to use spell check.

After the museum, we were hungry and had heard about a local dining spot called Pirates Cove. "They" said dogs were welcome, so we thought we'd try it out since Jasmine was with us.

To get there, take Hwy 98 east out of Foley and Hwy 95 south until it ends in the bay. Come back about 3/4ths of a mile and it's on the right.

If you're used to linen table cloths and fine crystal for your wine, then this isn't the place for you. However, if you're looking for reasonable food at a fair price with a reasonably good band and a VERY relaxed atmosphere, give this place a try.

Dogs are welcome here, off leash. There were several that wandered in and came up to our table. Unless you felt the need to feed them, they simply looked at you and wandered off. Jasmine laid under our table and ignored them.

Another shot of the expansive interior of the restaurant. The food was good and the view's awesome. A lot of boaters come to eat here from across the bay. Notice the "unique" hanging of the Christmas lights.
This turtle came to pay us a visit when we returned to our camp site. It is a Gulf Coast Spiny Softshell. These turtles gave up their hard shells in exchange for lightning speed through the water. They feed on fish and other creatures that are unfortunate enough to come close when they're hungry. They are quick and very aggressive. He did not like it when I touched his shell. They will bite.
